# Chapter Five: A Night Walker

***FRANKFURT, GERMANY,***

***2015***

The sound of running feet drowned the calm of the morning as she ran through streets not too far from Alexander Voigt Frankfurt.

Adrenaline pulsating from the thrill of a chase that could end in her death. A wild card was what she was. A daredevil.

Just as the enemy was gaining on her, she burst into an alley that had a concealed trap door on the ground that led straight into the parish of Alexander Voigt Frankfurt.

Only when she was securely behind the safety of the trap door did she let out a deep sigh of relief. It could have ended badly, but she knew she wouldn’t rest until the biggest mafia clan in Europe was frustrated to their own doom… That was her resolve.

Valda Schneider was only when her father died at the hands of the mafia. Her father was a revered priest who struck the wrong deals with these men in the shadows.

Since she was a minor at the time, the nuns at her late father’s parish in Frankfurt, took her in for fear of news getting out that a priest had a child out of wedlock.

The nuns, on the other hand, weren’t pleased with Valda’s late night vigilante…or any of her vigilante movements at all.

“You’re gonna get yourself killed, you stupid girl.” A voice said the minute Valda crept into her room. Sitting at the edge of Valda’s bed was Petra, the Mother superior at Alexander Voigt Frankfurt since the Archpriest who was Valda’s father met an unfortunate end.

Valda gulped and turned to face her. A heavy set woman with a commanding voice the other nuns feared.

“I’m talking to you, Valda. Are you trying to get yourself killed?”

“Oh, I’m sorry, it didn’t sound like a question the first time.” Valda wisecracked.

“You do realize,” Petra started to say, ignoring Valda’s attempt at evading the question. “ That the only reason you’re here is because your father wasn’t just any priest. He was revered. A man who had a positive impact on the lives he touched.”

“Yet you’re ashamed to let the world know he had a daughter.”

“What you’re asking is quite complicated, Valda. Besides, it’s only because of the value your father brought to the Abbey that you’re still here.”

“Or, you just don’t want to get your robes dirty by letting people know.”

“You should be grateful.” Petra said firmly.

“And I am, Mother Petra. Just let me do some good to clear his name and make sure no one has suffer at the hands of these brutes ever again.” Valda pleaded.

“Let me make something very clear, Valda Schneider.” Petra said in a brooding tone. “The Al-Zein clan is not to be fucked with. Klaus Gunter will have your head on a pike if you keep poking around doing all these vigilante nonsense. Your father thought he could bargain with the devil, but got served an car explosion. Don’t be stupid, child. Leave the mafia be. This is your last warning, young lady. Next time, you’ll be out on the streets.”

Without saying another word, she got up and left the room, slamming the door behind her.

The next day was kitchen duty for Valda as part of her punishment for sneaking out of the Abbey the previous night.

It was one thing to prepare the meals at Alexander Voigt, and an inferno when it came to cleaning the coal furnace which was used to heat up the water system for the whole Abbey. Why they still used it, even though it was something preferably suitable for industrial use, was something Valda couldn’t figure out.

“Hey Valda.” A voice whispered from behind her. She pulled her head out of the soot covered furnace to see who it was.

“Oh, hi Ursula.”

“No time for pleasantries, child. Did you get the location of the warehouse?” Ursula was the only nun who believed Valda’s father didn’t go rogue, and spent the last six months trying to prove it.

“Yes, but there’s a little problem.”

“What’s that?” Ursula asked, raising an eyebrow.

“I got spotted. Some Al-Zein thugs chased me, and I feel that might cause them to change their plans.”

“No, that can’t be right…their plans being changed is what I mean. But more importantly, you took a huge risk going on your own in the first place. It’s why I insisted you wait for me.”

“And I did, Ursula…I just didn’t wait too long. That would have messed up the plan, wouldn’t it?”

“This isn’t a movie, child.” Ursula said with concern in her eyes and voice.

“Well, I’m alive, see.” Valda spread her arms, grinning wildly and covered in patches of soot. “The important thing is I got we needed.” She then leaned forward, and dropped her voice to a casual whisper. “There’s a small yacht arriving at Oberhafen, the upper harbor of Osthafen. If my source has it right, I believe that’s where the exchange of defective medical devices would happen. And I strongly believe, that’s what my father was working on that got him killed.”

“The mafia has deep pockets, and even deeper immunity, Valda. Whatever you’re thinking, you can’t stop them alone. That’s suicide.”

“Who says I’m doing it alone?” Valda smirked.

“Vaaalda?” Ursula said in a dragged cautioning tone.

“Come with me, I’ll walk you through the plan.” Valda said, literally throwing in the towel to the soot covered coal furnace she was cleaning.
